PARTNERSHIP
What It Takes to Stand Up a Trade Floor
A trade floor needs four things before it can carry a cohort: a task list confirmed by local employers, an instructor qualified in the trade, a space that can be equipped and inspected, and funding that covers tools and consumables through at least the first sequence. Partnership conversations are organized around those four items, because a commitment that covers only one of them moves the program forward less than it appears to.Explore Programs↗
What this chapter requires in practice.
Employers are asked for the least glamorous and most useful contributions: an hour reviewing a task list, a shop tour, a bench evaluation of a graduating learner, retired-but-serviceable equipment, and a candid answer about what a first-year hire actually has to be able to do. Property owners, municipalities, and institutions with underused industrial or commercial space are the second conversation — a building with three-phase power, ventilation, and a loading door is often the difference between a trade floor in year one and a trade floor in year four.
Prospective learners are welcome to raise their hand now, with one condition attached to the invitation: this is an interest list, not an enrollment. There is no admissions decision to give, no start date to promise, and no tuition to collect until a trade floor reaches operational status in a specific city. When one does, the people on that list hear about it first, and they will hear the program's actual status when they do.
